Principal News

Dear Families,

Can you believe we're now at the end of Week 8? Term 2 has absolutely flown, which means there are only two weeks left of Term 2! It has been an incredibly busy and rewarding term, and we are so proud of how hard our students have been working. As we head into the final stretch, energy levels remain high and we encourage all families to continue to support their child /children every day with the importance of learning and friendships at school activities over the final fortnight of Term 2.

Huge thanks to our incredible Year 3 Camp Wilkin Crew! (Susan, Belinda, Tim K, Alice, Tim C, Satya and Matilda) Despite some challenging weather on Day 1, the camp was a huge success, due to efforts from our staff including high energy, positivity, flexibility, and dedication. Thank you for keeping our students safe and for making it such a memorable experience for them. No doubt all children were grateful for a good night's sleep upon return from camp. I also attended this camp and experienced a heap of fun and adventure with all of our Year 3 students. I was particularly proud of many students who gave everything a go across the different activities over the 2 days of camp.

On Tuesday this week our whole staff were immersed and engaged in a very productive and purposeful professional learning day. Our whole staff learning centred on Enhancing Classroom Connectedness and Culture. Throughout the day our staff focused on strengthening classroom connections and empowering student agency. We actively engaged in a variety of circle structure activities to expand our classroom wellbeing routines. We explored practical ways to use class meetings to elevate student voice through collaborative, problem-solving conversations with our students.

This coming Saturday the 13th June at 4pm at St Therese Church Torquay many of our Year 4 students will be receiving the sacrament of Eucharist for the first time. This is an important occasion for our school, Damascus Parish, Year 4 students and their families. As a Catholic school community, the First Eucharist is a sacred moment of celebration. It marks a beautiful step forward in our students' faith journeys as they are fully welcomed to the table of the Lord, deepening their connection to Christ and to all of us. We warmly invite you to keep these children and their families in your thoughts and prayers during this special time, as they receive this source of strength, love, and grace.

In Partnership,

Nathan

Early Pick-Ups & Student Departures: A Quick Guide

To help us ensure your child is ready and waiting for you when you arrive for an early pick-up, please keep the following guidelines in mind:

The Best Way to Notify Us: Email!

Please send an email to enquiries@stcatherine.catholic.edu.au for any planned early departures.

  • Why? This allows our office team to immediately update the calendar and notify your child's teacher.
  • A Note on SIMON: While we appreciate parents logging departures in SIMON ahead of time, our office team does not actively monitor this platform throughout the day. Emailing us directly ensures the message is seen.

Times to Avoid: Recess & Lunch

We kindly ask that you avoid scheduling pick-ups during break times if possible.

  • Break Times: 11:00 AM – 11:30 AM & 1:40 PM – 2:20 PM

During these windows, students are outside and often cannot hear announcements. Furthermore, classrooms are locked, meaning students cannot access their bags. Picking up during these times will unfortunately result in a much longer wait.

Thank you for your patience! Our school is a busy, vibrant environment, and while we always do our absolute best to have your child ready on time, we greatly appreciate your understanding and patience when unexpected delays occur.

School Fee Statements

School fee statements were sent out to all families this week. Please note that these statements are sent for your information only. If you have any questions regarding your statement, or if you noticed any declined payments that you are unsure about, please do not hesitate to reach out to Belynda Smith at Belynda.smith@stcatherine.catholic.edu.au for assistance.

Learning & Teaching Update

REPORTING

Learning Conversations - This coming Monday 15th and Tuesday 16th June

A reminder that our student-led learning conversations will take place on Monday and Tuesday in Week 9.  If you have not yet made an appointment, please ensure you do so through SIMON (families who have recently had a PSG meeting may not need an appointment time).

The beginning of this meeting will be student led where students will share their achievements and goals.  Students have been working hard on their reflections to share with their families and our student-led component of the learning conversation is an important process in developing student voice and efficacy with their learning.

A reminder that our usual classroom programs will not run from 12.30pm on Monday and Tuesday due to Learning Conversations.  Families are encouraged and welcomed to collect students at this time.  Please complete this form if you intend to collect your child/ren early.

Written reports

Our teachers have been diligently working on assessment and written reports in the background over the past weeks.  Our written reports provide an opportunity for families to view your child/ren’s progress against state wide curriculum standards and celebrate your chid/ren’s achievements for Semester 1.

Reports will be available on Thursday of Week 10 through SIMON.  We encourage you to read the teachers’ comments carefully and view the report alongside the ongoing work and assessment samples and feedback on Seesaw.

HOMEWORK UPDATE

Since previous newsletter correspondence, we have seen some improvement with our maths fluency homework in Years 3-6, with 12% of students engaging in the minimum expectation of 20 minutes of maths fluency practice each week over the past fortnight (up from 6%). BUT, St Catherine’s, we can do much better!  Remember that children need more practice with reading and maths than what we can provide in the short and busy school day. Staff cannot improve literacy and numeracy outcomes without support from home.

We continue to strongly advocate for families to schedule and adhere to regular practice time for reading and maths fluency practice each day.

FAITH FOCUS: The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus

The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus is a special devotion in the Catholic Church that focuses on Jesus’ deep and personal love for all people.

The Sacred Heart of Jesus is often shown as a heart that is burning with love, sometimes surrounded by thorns and shining with light. These symbols remind us that:

  • Jesus loves us completely
  • He suffered for us
  • His love is constant and never ends

This devotion invites us to reflect on the heart of Jesus as a sign of compassion, mercy, and forgiveness. It reminds us that no matter who we are or what we have done, we are always loved by Him.

Catholics honour the Sacred Heart through prayer, especially in the month of June, and by trying to live like Jesus—showing kindness, patience, and love to others.

First Eucharist Celebration – A Special Milestone

This weekend, we joyfully celebrate our students who are receiving the Eucharist for the first time. This is a very special moment in their faith journey, as they come to the table of the Lord and receive Jesus in a personal and meaningful way.

The Eucharist is at the heart of our Catholic faith. It is a time of prayer, thanksgiving, and unity, where we remember Jesus’ love for us and His gift of Himself.

We congratulate our students on their preparation, learning and reflection throughout this important sacramental journey. They have shown great reverence, curiosity and growing understanding of what it means to be part of the Church community.

As they take this next step in their faith, we pray that they always feel close to Jesus and continue to grow in love, kindness and faith in their everyday lives.

We also thank their families, teachers and the parish community for supporting and guiding them along the way.

Please keep our students in your prayers as they celebrate this beautiful sacrament for the first time.

Prayer to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus,
we thank you for your great love for us.

Help us to trust in you
and to follow your example each day.

Make our hearts gentle and kind,
patient and forgiving,
just like yours.

Guide us to care for others
and to live with love in all we do.

May we always turn to you
and find peace in your presence.

Amen.
